A linocut is a printmaking technique where an artist carves a design into a block of
linoleum, then inks the raised, uncarved areas and presses the block onto paper to
create a print, essentially resulting in a mirror image of the carved design; the areas cut
away remain uninked on the paper, creating the negative space in the image.
Artist's Statement
I dreamed of an octopus embracing Vashon Island. I then spent the summer carving my dream into a sheet of linoleum. Finally, after applying black ink onto the linoleum block in the parking lot at Vashon Center for the Arts, I drove a steamroller over it to print it onto paper. And here it is.
